Review: Come, All Ye Faithful - Christmas in Garland #7

Come, All Ye Faithful book cover on blue background

After meeting Zachery in an earlier Christmas in Garland series book, readers will be thrilled to know that we finally get his story, and what a turn of events it is for him!

Come, All Ye Faithful by A.M. Heath is a book that invites readers into deeper truths about the Christian walk, making it relevant for any time of the year.

Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

He’s exactly her type … unfortunately.

Rosalynd Cawthorn moved away to escape the shame of who she once was. She’s determined not to fall back into old habits, but her new job at the Cheery Inn brings her face-to-face with the last thing she needs: temptation.

Zackery Baker has left his womanizing days behind him. Sidelined with a shoulder injury, the NFL player is spending December at the Cheery Inn with his son. Intrigued by the new manager, he suddenly has two things on his Christmas list.

Rosalynd knows better than to fall for a man like Zack, and she’s determined to keep her distance. Zack, however, is just as determined to win her over. But when a new guy enters the game, Zack may find her heart’s been intercepted.

Note: Come, All Ye Faithful is a sequel to It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.

Book Thoughts

If you've enjoyed earlier Christmas in Garland stories, this is the redemption story you didn't know you were waiting for. Zachery Baker, a football player who made a previous appearance in It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, is back with his own story and it's every bit as powerful as the other books in this series. Highlighting his new faith in Christ, Zack is learning what it means to become a man of God, and we are invited into his heartfelt journey from past sins toward sanctification. It's not a smooth path for him as he navigates the natural consequences of his prior selfishness and rebellion, so seeing him grasp the concept of grace is immensely moving.

It's this contrast that sets the stage for how Rosalynd perceives her faith and how she is grappling with similar issues in her life. I love that this book isn't afraid to tackle prevalent beliefs in the church that border on or are outright false teachings. Zack and Rosalynd show us the vital importance of spiritual discernment and the implications it can have on our walks with God. The author doesn't shy away from calling these teachings out, and I love the subtlety involved in communicating truth. Readers looking for a sweet Christmas romance that always delivers more in terms of touching both the heart and the mind will enjoy what it means to made new in Christ in Come, All Ye Faithful.

Book Quotes

My heart gripped from inside. I wanted that freedom so badly. I wanted to walk away from the guilt and the shame and the memories. I had salvation. But I didn’t have peace. “Lord, forgive me for accepting Your gift with one hand and trying to earn it with the other. Teach me to rest in You and what You’ve already done.” Tears gathered in my eyes. I couldn’t appreciate His gift, freely given, when I was trying to repay it or secure it, although it had never been threatened. Suddenly all of life looked restricting and suffocating. How in the world had I stood it for even this long?

Mortality and Reading

This is a topic that has been resonating for me over the past few days, ever since I saw James Trevino's Instagram reel about why you shouldn't finish every book you start. In it, he breaks down the math of how many books we'd be able to read in a lifetime, based on reading a set number of hours per day and the average lifespan. He then compares this number to the number of books that are available worldwide. At first glance, it made me realize that I would have a lot of unread books, no matter whether my life is short or long. There's just too many books to read. Thinking about when my life might end led me to think about the types of books I read and how I'm currently filling my time. I don't think it's a coincidence that right after this crossed my mind, I was listening to  The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis where he espouses a simple but profound line that stopped me in my tracks: "If you don't read good books, you will read bad ones." Thi...
