Review: Someone to Lean On - Faith Endures #3

Someone to Lean On book cover on blue background

It is such a gift to be able to work with a publisher and almost have them predict which books you'll love (thank you!) 😄

Someone to Lean On, the third book in the Faith Endures series, by Carrie Walker is one that had me extremely intrigued on how the characters connected to one another. Even though I haven't yet read the previous two books in this trilogy, I hope to do so now after reading this book!

Many thanks to Mountain Brook Ink for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

They're seeking a peace they can't seem to find. . .

Aged out of the foster care system and struggling to raise her young daughter, Lucia Roberts loses her only source of income. When she's offered a position caring for a four-year-old foster child, Timothy, it feels like the answer to a prayer-except for one catch. She must work in the home of Jordan Nowak, Timothy's overly vigilant foster father who scrutinizes her every move.

Jordan has built his life around one promise: protect a foster child until they can find a happily ever after. But while Jordan fights to keep Timmy safe, his own world spirals out of control. The music store he co-owns with his brother is on the brink of bankruptcy after months of mismanagement. Torn between protecting Timmy, saving the store, and guarding his heart, Jordan grasps for any possibility to fix it all.

Mason Hughes is in his final year of medical school, on rotation under a difficult neurologist, and doubting his call to be a doctor. As the walls between Lucia and Jordan soften, Timmy starts displaying puzzling symptoms. Soon Mason must choose whether he trusts his medical instincts enough to fight an ethical battle.

As three adults seek control in their lives, a young child with no guarantees teaches them to trust.

Book Thoughts

Prepare for your heart to be captured by little Tim, a sweet boy who is recently placed in foster care. This story draws together a foster parent, a daytime caregiver, a social worker, a medical school student, a struggling mother, and a couple who are grieving the loss of their child into a community of support and love as Tim faces significant life changes at a young age. Surrounding these diverse characters are other family members, friends, and mentors who provide just as much care and direction through their persistent prayers and presence. Someone to Lean On is just the type of book that will envelop you in its arms as you open your heart to what God can make possible when His people follow His leading.

Concluding the Faith Endures series where storylines are wrapped up and characters experience growth and maturity, this book also reads as a standalone, so it's easy to drop into this tight-knit circle and understand where the characters are coming from. Embodying the heart of Philippians 4:6, readers are reminded that we need not be anxious and that we can always present our requests to God. If you're looking for a touching story involving caregivers in multiple forms, this is a magnificently woven journey that calls different people in the body of Christ to fulfill their function and role for a greater and more sacrificial purpose, which is to love others and believe that God will work out all things for good in the midst of uncertainty and confusion.

All the Cheese

I've been coming across content within the past several weeks that has stereotyped Christian books (and other mediums) as being cheesy on Christian accounts. While this isn't a new label or even a new topic, what has surprised me somewhat has been seeing more Christian authors jump into this conversation who wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Although some authors will name others whom they believe are writing non-cheesy fiction, I feel as though the damage has been done by repeating this blanket statement. While readers have freely been engaging in this type of commentary for some time, it's been interesting to see authors chime in, where in some cases, there seems to be an emphasis on self-promotion over reflection. I'm not stereotyping and saying that all authors or even the authors I'm connected to respond with this tactic (because I really don't think they do!), but there are a few out there from my limited experience who seem to respond to this disc...

Who else is excited for the next installment in the Timeless series by Gabrielle Meyer to release this month?! This is likely my favourite historical Christian fiction series and one I will continue to recommend. I kept my husband intrigued with enough hints for Every Hour Until Then that he now has to find time to read books two to four to get caught up 😄 Many thanks to  Bethany House Publishers  and  NetGalley  for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration.
