Review: The Risk She Takes - A Healing Kind of Love #3

The Risk She Takes book cover on blue background

The third book in A Healing Kind of Love series, The Risk She Takes by Ella Marie is the much-awaited story of Robyn Lahey, a driven professional who isn't waiting for a relationship to take place. It's refreshing to encounter someone I can relate to and to see how God has been working in her life when she doesn't fit into the mould of her friends.

This book releases on February 18, 2026 and will have you wanting a French pastry, or two, to enjoy with it 🥐

Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

For Robyn, singleness isn’t some tragic waiting room for real life to begin.

By the grace of God, she’s built a life she genuinely loves, one that doesn’t require a man in the equation. Especially not a man like Lucien Monet, her insufferably—and apparently—charming French coworker who has an uncanny talent for pulling the rug out from under her at every turn.

Lucien crossed an ocean to escape a past where caring too much always cost him something.

America was meant to be a clean slate, a place free of attachments. But somehow, the woman who treats him like a sworn enemy for reasons only known by God is the one he can’t stop thinking about. Robyn doesn’t merely dislike him, she bristles at the sight of him. Which is baffling, given that Lucien has only shown patience, kindness, and every other fruit of the Spirit in her vicinity.

When an unexpected trip to Paris forces them into close quarters, tensions rise, sparks crackle, and the questions they’ve both been dodging become impossible to ignore.

Can two people who’ve piled up prejudices against each other ever find common ground and discover that real, Christ-centered love might be worth the risk?

Book Thoughts

I absolutely adore Robyn's no-nonsense attitude in this book and it's a delight to discover more about this finance executive who is as efficient with her life as she is with her work. Pairing her with Lucien, a French colleague who embraces a work-life balance and savours la joie de vivre, it's a blast to see their personalities and perspectives edge up against each other while sorting through their company's issues. When the opportunity to travel to Paris presents itself, it's clear that this trip challenges many of Robyn's notions toward life and that Lucien is just the fellow believer to help her work through them as he encounters his family again.

This book is a splendid and tender look into the fears that can hold us back, keeping us from what God may want for us. Ella Marie writes in an empathetic manner such that Robyn's heart is on full display, without a hint of condemnation or shame. The Risk She Takes has the best take on self-forgiveness that I've encountered in Christian fiction (it's not what you think!) and it exemplifies self-control and patience to the next level. Whether you've read the previous books in the series or not, this is a very satisfying story filled with Christian community and sacrificial love. Readers seeking a romance based on Christlike selflessness will find Robyn and Lucien's story to be stirring, realistic, and edifying.

All the Cheese

I've been coming across content within the past several weeks that has stereotyped Christian books (and other mediums) as being cheesy on Christian accounts. While this isn't a new label or even a new topic, what has surprised me somewhat has been seeing more Christian authors jump into this conversation who wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Although some authors will name others whom they believe are writing non-cheesy fiction, I feel as though the damage has been done by repeating this blanket statement. While readers have freely been engaging in this type of commentary for some time, it's been interesting to see authors chime in, where in some cases, there seems to be an emphasis on self-promotion over reflection. I'm not stereotyping and saying that all authors or even the authors I'm connected to respond with this tactic (because I really don't think they do!), but there are a few out there from my limited experience who seem to respond to this disc...

Mortality and Reading

This is a topic that has been resonating for me over the past few days, ever since I saw James Trevino's Instagram reel about why you shouldn't finish every book you start. In it, he breaks down the math of how many books we'd be able to read in a lifetime, based on reading a set number of hours per day and the average lifespan. He then compares this number to the number of books that are available worldwide. At first glance, it made me realize that I would have a lot of unread books, no matter whether my life is short or long. There's just too many books to read. Thinking about when my life might end led me to think about the types of books I read and how I'm currently filling my time. I don't think it's a coincidence that right after this crossed my mind, I was listening to  The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis where he espouses a simple but profound line that stopped me in my tracks: "If you don't read good books, you will read bad ones." Thi...
