Review: A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure

A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure book cover on blue background

I'm so grateful that many other readers pointed me toward A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure by Angela Bell as it was the exact whimsy and joy I was seeking in my books while I was fighting an illness. With Angela being a featured author in the Clearly Christian Readathon last year, I appreciated being exposed to a new author and a new genre at the same time!

Book Synopsis

When Clara's ex-fiancé spreads rumors that her family suffers from hereditary insanity, it's all she can do to protect them from society's prejudice. However, that proves to be difficult when her grandfather takes off on a flight of fancy. Thrown together with a vagabond tinker, Clara sets off on a whimsical adventure and finds a love that defies the odds.

Book Thoughts

What a world that Angela Bell has created! It was a sheer pleasure to disappear into her poetic language and escape to a world where a touch of the fantastical borders on the eccentric. Steampunk is a new genre to me, so it was intriguing to see how science fiction blended with the Victorian era and its technology at the time. After reading such a story, I'm charmed by all the possibilities that retro-futuristic fiction can present to readers, especially within Christian literature. Heralding the lessons of the past and combining them with the optimism of what could be beyond the imagination, Clara undertakes much of the same journey. From being an untrusting and albeit, somewhat rather rude, young lady to one who discovers what it means to live with a softened heart before God by relinquishing control over to her Maker, we can witness the transformation take place before our eyes.

Wholly unique and whimsical, the messages of Christian faith imparted in this book are worth reading as they inspire and challenge us to let go of our need to shoulder what God has not asked us to carry. Balancing family responsibility with love, Clara's grandpa and mother help her see what her role in life is by viewing her as a child of God above all. Factor in Theodore's kindness, self-sacrifical love, and resilience, and it's the making of a grand romance that spans the countries across Europe. Readers wanting to immerse themselves in a mechanical world filled with lyrical embellishments and a menagerie of God's creatures will find A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure to be just that, a marvelous display of God's tender care for us no matter our circumstances.

Review: Movie-Made Romance: Christmas in Garland Collection #4

For anyone who has played bingo along with Christmas Romance movies, it's clear that there are definite (and repeated) themes. Movie-Made Romance by A.M. Double Takes

Continuing on the theme of books that can be labourious to get through, I've been coming across more and more content in Christian fiction that has me scratching my head, though they don't necessarily always affect the rating of the book (unless they're all piled on egregiously or something, but that hasn't happened yet). To be honest, a double take is usually the extent of what I give these mentions, but I do find it interesting that there is a bit of a shift in what can be included in Christian fiction nowadays. There are just a few of the ones that have stood out to me over the past while, though I'm sure there could be more added to the list as well. Luck/chance . I have caught myself in the past wishing someone "good luck" even though I don't believe in it, so I've tried to shift to saying things like, "all the best" or "I'll be thinking of you," even if it's a little longer or more awkward to say. All that to say, ...
