Review: Someone from Christmas Past - Laurel Ridge #3

Someone from Christmas Past book cover on blue background

Just in time for Christmas, this suspenseful story about the rescue of a little boy will draw you into a wintry world filled with mysteries, second chances, and happy tidings. Someone from Christmas Past by Lesa Henderson is a book that will keep you flipping through the pages to discover what's next for Elise and Jaxson in their harrowing adventure.

This third book in the Laurel Ridge series follows up on Lee and Cameron's cousin, who has quite the story in the earlier books and is not to be missed.

Many thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Content to be aware of: self-forgiveness, ethnic idiom (author has confirmed it is complimentary), past sins, children in danger

Book Synopsis

Can love return from a Christmas past? After a painful divorce, Elise Raines moves to the quiet mountain town of Laurel Ridge, determined to rebuild her life for herself and her young daughter, Amelia. Planning her cousin's Christmas wedding seems like the perfect distraction...until Jaxson Bleu, her childhood sweetheart and now a country music superstar, returns to town. The boy she walked away from is back, his heart transformed by newfound belief. But their reunion stirs up old wounds and an undeniable spark.

When Elise discovers a mysterious, silent child in the roadside brush, their lives take an unexpected turn. As they race to uncover the boy's identity, Elise and Jaxson are drawn into a dangerous web of secrets that threatens their safety and the fragile trust they're starting to rebuild.

Jaxson never expected to face the woman who broke his heart, but as they work together to protect the child, he realizes his journey isn't just about redemption; it's about proving he' s finally the man Elise always deserved. Yet Elise harbors a secret of her own, one that could shatter their second chance before it even begins.

With danger closing in, can they find the courage to forgive, the strength to protect the innocent, and the faith to fight for a love they were always meant to share?

Book Thoughts

What starts out as a reunion of friends in this book quickly turns into a deadly chase for Elise Raines. If you've had the opportunity to read the previous books in the Laurel Ridge series, it's a treat to find out how Cameron and Lee's cousin is doing after she has experienced a breakdown in her marriage. Doing her best to raise Amelia on her own, Elise is a nurturer through and through. It's her caring nature that has her embroiled in some schemes that she unknowingly gets wrapped up in, making her a target as her cousins and friends try to protect her. As Elise navigates her next steps, she is also trying to figure out her feelings after her first love returns to town.

I appreciate the representation from the Indigenous community in this book and that Jaxson Bleu is able to share some of the cultural tensions he has experienced. It's touching to see just how much Jaxson and Elise have grown after their tumultuous pasts as orphans, and the messages around Christmastime are a perfect reminder of how they are not fatherless. Both characters learn how to better listen to God as they not only rescue each other, but others along the way. If you're looking for a suspenseful Christmas story about receiving God's forgiveness and experiencing His second chances, Someone from Christmas Past will point you to the One who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Friday Reads

While sharing my weekly reads has helped me to read a bit more than usual, I have to admit that it also incites a little panic in me when I realize that all the books I had hoped to complete are still in various stages of progress. At the same time, it also indicates to me that I do have more time to read if I don't get distracted by other activities, like scrolling on my phone 😀 This week, I'll be working on the following books: 📘 Christian fiction: Between Stairs and Stardust by Pepper Basham 📗 Christian non-fiction: Pilgrimage by Lynn Austin 📙 Non-Christian fiction: Elizabeth: Obstinate Headstrong Girl from The Quill Collective 📕 Non-Christian non-fiction: Simple and Delicious Vegan by Michaela Vais I'm looking forward to all sorts of reads this weekend!

Review: The God You Need to Know

Pneumatology is a subject I confess that I don't focus on as much, so I was intrigued by The God You Need to Know by Margaret Feinberg, particularly given its Old Testament perspective. In studying the intersection of faith and the arts during seminary and recounting how the Spirit was first given to Bezalel and Oholiab, I was delighted to discover an entire chapter devoted to the Artisan Spirit, making this book an enriching read. Many thanks to ICON Media Group  for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis Discover answers to your biggest questions about the Holy Spirit--and invite the Spirit to move in your life in powerful, real, tangible ways. Everyone has questions about the Holy Spirit. If faith in Jesus provides my connection to God, then what role does the Holy Spirit play? How is the Spirit part of my day-to-day relationship with Christ? And why doesn't the Spirit's work play out in my life the w...
