Review: The Highland Heist - A Freddie and Grace Mystery #4

The Highland Heist book cover on blue background

Freddie and Grace are the perfect candidates for having their travels upended by local mysteries that require their unconventional sleuthing, and The Highland Heist by Pepper Basham is no exception. This wonderful continuation of the series introduces us to even more skeletons in the closet. As a result, we get to know Lord and Lady Astley more fully as they embark on more travels and more clues, this time in Scotland!

Many thanks to Barbour Books and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

Grace Storms a Scottish Castle to Save Her Sister

Lord Astley surprises his wife with a trip to America to see her family before they end their honeymoon adventures. But just as they arrive, they find Grace’s sister, Lillias, is the prime suspect in her husband’s murder. To add to the confusion a solicitor arrives to tell the sisters they are needed in Scotland immediately to claim their mother’s inheritance. The clock is ticking to clear Lillias of suspicion, but someone is determined to keep the sisters from reaching the Scottish Highlands. When Lillias disappears, Freddie and Grace race to Scotland, sure the answers will be found in a long-forgotten castle. With a ghost from Frederick’s past leaving threatening clues along the way, the mysterious Mr. Kane waiting in the wings to grab the inheritance for himself, and an apparition haunting the infamous castle, Lord and Lady Astley must capture the castle, save Lillias, and not die in the process.

Book Thoughts

It's astounding to think that Freddie and Grace are only just returning home after their grand honeymoon adventures in Egypt and Italy. Considering how well they work together—personally and professionally as amateur detectives—it has been wonderful to see their temperaments complement one another when they are such different people. This fact is reinforced even more upon encountering Lillias, Grace's sister, once again. Embroiled in another mystery that hits closer to home, Freddie and Grace further discover the strengths and gifts they see in each other. In facing one perilous situation after another, Lord and Lady Astley deepen their trust in God as they encounter the most unintentional skirmishes facing their loved ones, creating a thrilling adventure for readers.

Pepper Basham is skilled at adding a touch of whimsy to the Freddie and Grace mysteries, creating an effective recipe for charm, dashing love, and wit. Getting to observe a married couple work through issues together is a refreshing reminder that God can do incredible things when a husband and wife are united in Him. I love that Freddie and Grace pray for each other's protection and that their actions are selfless. Their adopted daughter, Zahra, is clever and proves to be the perfect scene-stealer. If you've been following along with these mysteries, you'll enjoy this foray into Scotland while discovering family secrets and seeing the Astleys deepen their spiritual bond in tending to their loved ones.

Review: Wes and Addie Had Their Chance - Adelaide Springs #3

After visiting Colorado, I can see why this series has won a Colorado Book Award in the romance category. It's a celebration of all things small-town and Americana with a charming cast of characters.  Wes and Addie Had Their Chance  by  Bethany Turner  is the third book in the Adelaide Springs series and it's helpful to read the first two books as they culminate in this story. This book releases July 15, 2025, so there's time to catch up on the previous titles if this clean book series is of interest to you. This is a disclaimer that although this book is published by a Christian publisher, this book falls along the lines of clean fiction, so expectations should be set accordingly. I shared the following when I reviewed  Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other  and Cole and Laila are Just Friends , and as this book follows those two, I'll adopt the same refrain again: This is more of a crossover title that fits the genre of what the author terms "pop culture-i...

Palate Cleansers

Partially inspired by summer and partially because I like eating, I was thinking about the role of palate cleansers between courses of food, notably sorbet. I really enjoy the reset that the palate cleansers provide, allowing for a richer sense of taste to come with the next dish. In terms of reading, I admit that I have had a lot of ARCs to read this year. I've read close to 30 ARCs so far and have another 20 or so to go. I'm by no means complaining as I really enjoy reading; however, I can attest to a bit of fatigue from trying to get in as much reading as possible to meet release deadlines. It doesn't quite feel like work yet, but I will admit that when the ARCs are back-to-back, it can be a little hard to continually be motivated. As a result, I've been looking forward to setting aside a month to take a break from ARC commitments and to just enjoy whatever titles come my way and to make more of a dent in my TBR pile. While I will continue to try to meet a few upcomi...
