Review: The Song of the Overcomer

The Song of the Overcomer book cover on blue background

Every once in a while, there is a book that comes along that will change your perspective on the most unexpected things. In my case, my view on birds has changed and I appreciate their variances and behaviour so much more now.

Written as a spiritual allegory, I can see how The Song of the Overcomer by B.C. Penn also affords a fresh perspective on God's creation and it's something I can witness right from the window every day. Taking place over different times and seasons, this is a profound story about spiritual discernment and faith in God that Christians will enjoy reading and sharing.

For more information on this book, make sure to check out the Digital Press Kit and explore the website for wonderful accompaniments to the book, including illustrations and devotionals.

Many thanks to the author and media coordinator for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

Robins are the first birds to start the dawn chorus and even sing through the night.

They will also fight to the death to defend their territory, the red of their breasts a sign of the wounds they will risk.

Imagine if one of them is a Christian, and the farm in which he lives is the rest of the world.

Meet the indomitable Blue Tit, with his bright and playful boldness; the uncompromising Wagtail, whose feathers are simply black or white; and the witnessing Jay, with her radiant wing flash and arresting call.

But Magpie, who is greedy for shiny things, preaches a false promise of prosperity; Green Woodpecker, with her unique gift of tapping, is determined to be centre-stage; Crossbill, with his twisted beak, distorts the truth with his prophetic words; and the white Goose, who looks very like the grace-filled Swan but isn’t, offers only a pretence of forgiveness and loyalty.

As Crow’s wickedness turns light into darkness in their world, and time grows short, will Robin and his faithful friend, Sparrow, conquer evil with love and remain true until the end?

Book Thoughts

This is the book that will give new meaning to the verse: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26a). After reading The Song of the Overcomer, I can attest that it is difficult to look at birds the same way again! It is a joy and treasure that spiritual discernment is taught so carefully through the representation of different birds, making me more cognizant of the types of teachings that are prevalent amongst Christians today. Each slant on the truth is masterfully communicated, which allows readers to exercise discernment by identifying deceptive ideologies and witnessing the harm done when these concepts turn into practice.

I absolutely love Robin's story and found myself caring for and crying alongside this wonderful character who seeks to serve His Lord, the Eagle. It's an ideal book for families with older children and youth to read together as the birds convey biblical truth in a captivating manner while touching on relevant and mature themes. Storytelling is such a powerful gift that God grants His people and in this case, the birds do a splendid job of walking readers through the topics of discipleship, persecution, and the end times. If you are looking for a Christian allegory that will cause you to think more deeply about your theology and what it means to follow Him, don't miss out on Robin and his friends as they lift up their voices to worship God in this soul-stirring story.

Book Quotes

“The esteem and recognition of this world mean nothing in My kingdom. Many who are closest to Me live lives which appear completely ordinary: but their self-surrender and intimacy with Me make them unspeakably precious.” “I know, Father, I’m sorry.” “Robin, neither gifts, nor presentation, nor popularity reflect a bird’s closeness to Me. Anyone who looks to these outward signs of success, to tell them whether another bird truly loves Me, will be deceived. Talents, appearance and the approval of others are the world’s measures of value. In My kingdom, what matters is the heart, and My fruit of peace, genuine love, joy, kindness, self-control, and patience which flow from it when it is submitted to Me.”

Review: The Battle for Heaven and Earth - A Story of Scripture #1

When I saw this book being offered for #CampNetGalley  this summer, I knew that it would be an excellent opportunity to try biblical fiction with a twist on it. The Battle for Heaven and Earth by Mark M. Yarbrough and Jerry B. Jenkins is a book unlike what I've read before and it's already whet my appetite for what's next in the series. It's riveting with fast-paced scenes while plunging me into scenes of much spiritual depth. Since it won't be published until November 3, 2026, I am grateful I didn't have to wait that long to enjoy this title.  Many thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis In the beginning—before Earth, before humanity, before sin--there was Heaven. And it was perfect. This is the story of creation as you've never imagined it. Once united in worship and purpose, the angelic realm is shaken when Lucifer—the most beautiful a...
