Review: Tangled Up in Love - Trinity Lakes Romance #9

Tangled Up in Love book cover on blue background

Rounding out the last of Carolyn Miller's books in the Trinity Lakes Romance series for me to read, I was thrilled to catch Ellie Reilly's story in Tangled Up in Love. There was so much I could relate to, including having wanderlust captivate you to the point of wanting to pick up everything and move abroad, so I appreciated getting to relive those experiences through her perspective.

Content to be aware of: brief reference to vibes and speaking things into existence

Book Synopsis

One kiss didn't mean much. One kiss could mean everything.

When Ellie Reilly returns from a dream overseas trip, a too-long hug from her best friend Jasper Cohen clues her in that his feelings might be more than what she suspected. He's unsure about pushing their friendship further, and doubly uncertain when her European friend, Sebastian, seeks her out in Trinity Lakes.

Uncertainty is something Ellie knows all too well. Since returning from her vacation, Ellie feels like she doesn't fit at her family's ranch or in small town life. When she is asked to take on responsibility for reopening Trinity Lakes' historical museum—a dream she's always wanted—she can't help but wonder if settling for life in the familiar is all that God has for her, or can she dare trust Him for more?

Can these two best friends push past mistakes and insecurities and find a future together?

Book Thoughts

Oh, the tension between travelling the world and experiencing its wonders and the realities of home and the longing to continue feeling that excitement. After touring Europe and having her eyes opened to history, Ellie Reilly is torn on what to do with her life back in small town eastern Washington. Combining her indecision over the future with her best friend who has always wanted to be more in her life, she is left with even more unanswered questions. This book addresses what happens when we fall into the trap of romanticizing our life without consulting God. It's a sensitive exploration into being carried away without fully realizing the consequences.

Thankfully, Ellie is not alone and it is a joy to see her family care for her by speaking necessary truths to her. While there are drawbacks to being in a small town with the gossip and matchmaking, Trinity Lakes is truly a community that looks out for each other with a strong contingent of Christians who take the time to support one another. I love seeing Jasper's reliance on God and his repentance after rushing ahead of Him, and how his humility sets the pace for the book. Readers who enjoy stories about daily faithfulness and long-suffering love will appreciate the journey that Ellie and Jasper take toward each other and ultimately, God, as they serve Him in obedience and steadfastness.

Review: Unveiling Grace

Unveiling Grace: The Story of How We Found Our Way Out of the Mormon Church  is a book where the title pretty much says it all. Book Synopsis A gripping story of how an entire family, deeply enmeshed in Mormonism for thirty years, found their way out and found faith in Jesus Christ. For thirty years, Lynn Wilder, once a tenured faculty member at Brigham Young University, and her family lived in, loved, and promoted the Mormon Church. Then their son Micah, serving his Mormon mission in Florida, had a revelation: God knew him personally. God loved him. And the Mormon Church did not offer the true gospel. Micah's conversion to Christ put the family in a tailspin. They wondered, Have we believed the wrong thing for decades? If we leave Mormonism, what does this mean for our safety, jobs, and relationships? Is Christianity all that different from Mormonism anyway? As Lynn tells her story of abandoning the deception of Mormonism to receive God's grace, she gives a rare look into Morm...

Review: The Pursuit of Character

Classical education has always appealed to me in that reasoning and fruitful living that contributes to society are meant to be admirable and achievable goals. Reflecting a world where cardinal virtues are esteemed, I love that The Pursuit of Character by Matthew Arbo arrives at this vision from a Christian perspective, providing a compelling case for why Christians need to recover this framework and way of life. Many thanks to Baker Books for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis What does it mean to live a good life? Know what makes for a good life Pursue character and meaning Recover the virtues that have guided Christians before us In today's fragmented world, we are encouraged to define for ourselves what is good. But this inevitably fails to satisfy. In The Pursuit of Character , Matthew Arbo argues that we can learn how to live a good life by recovering the virtues that have guided Christians before us....
