Review: The Rekindled Heart

The Rekindled Heart book cover on blue background

I acknowledge that it's easy for me to fall into a spiritual rut and treat walking with God like a checklist. I fall into these bouts knowingly and unknowingly, so I was quite keen to read The Rekindled Heart by Mark Y. Yarbrough as both a refresher and a reminder of how to energize my spiritual life again. This book was just what I needed and it's one that I will continue to reflect on in the coming days and weeks.

Many thanks to Moody Publishers for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

Sometimes our faith needs to be revived.

You started your spiritual life with a burst of joy, feeling deep gratitude to Christ for saving you. You rejoiced with a sense of belonging in the family of God. And likely, you couldn’t wait to open your Bible, to worship, to share your faith with others. But somewhere along the way, your passion for the Lord faded. Your spiritual journey became a slog.

The Rekindled Heart was written for you. Bible teacher and seminary president with a shepherd's heart, Mark Yarbrough helps you rekindle the joy of your salvation by guiding you back to six core essentials for reviving your faith.

  • Devotion—Bold Trust in God’s Word
  • Dependence—A Full God-Reliance on God’s Power
  • Love— Authentic Compassion for Others
  • Holiness—Relentless Pursuit of God-Honoring Excellence
  • Servanthood—Genuine Selflessness
  • World Impact—Courageous Zeal for God’s World

Biblically rich, theologically sound, and with real-life applications that connect to all ages, this book delivers a compelling reminder of the seriousness of following Jesus and the limitless experience of God’s power and provision for anyone who believes His Word.

Book Thoughts

This is a book where the content offered is simple, though not easy, making it an approachable and encouraging guide. It serves as a reminder that there are seasons in life where things may feel dry or empty; however, it doesn't mean that the season has to last indefinitely. I appreciate the concept that feeling distant from God doesn't have to come from deep trauma or life-altering events; it can be the most mundane of reasons that causes us to slightly veer away from Him. Yet, in God's grace and mercy, He is waiting for us to turn back and will lovingly receive us with open arms.

The six essentials that Mark M. Yarbrough shares are not performative works but small actions of faith that align with the posture of a heart desiring to be close with God again. It's a gentle nudge toward the things that can warm our faith after it has cooled down, with personal anecdotes and illustrations from the Bible that demonstrate how other believers have grappled with similar experiences. I love that this book can be useful for all ages and stages, whether for youth and young adults or those who have walked with the Lord for many years. Readers looking for a succinct and guilt-free resource on how to rekindle their hearts toward God will appreciate the hope and joy infused in this book.

Review: What Is Left of the Night

I'm very grateful to be able to read my first fiction book by Mark Buchanan , a Canadian author who has written extensively on Christian non-fiction topics. What Is Left of the Night is an ambitious feat, combining multiple points-of-view to deliver a story that is as suspenseful as it is thoughtful. Discourse and action carefully balance each other, keeping rapt attention on a book based on true events during the Second World War. Theological Backgrounds

Have you ever wondered about the theological background of authors? I am sometimes curious, especially if there are things that pop up in their books that make me pay attention (either positively or negatively). What I've found is that it's not always easy to find out. Some authors will openly share what church or denomination they belong to, whereas others don't seem to mention it—which for privacy concerns, I completely understand. In terms of how important this information may be for readers, or not at all for some, it does make me think about the role that this could play when deciding which books to read and buy. On the one hand, I think not specifically knowing which theological stream an author comes from but still being aware that they fall within the broader evangelical umbrella is fine with me. There's so much to learn as believers and I wouldn't want to be limited to only simply what I know. On the other hand, not knowing much beyond "Christian"...

Hello Again

Wow, this is the longest I've been away from blogging, so thank you for taking the time to check out old posts and reviews instead! It hasn't been fun being sick, especially when I didn't even have the energy to read anything for the first part of my illness. I'm slowly on the mend and hope to change my reading stats for the remainder of the month. In case I haven't expressed it on here, I am deeply grateful to you for reading my little musings and different Christian book reviews. Although I haven't had the energy to even think about posting reviews, I have missed them, so stay tuned for the ones coming up! I wish you a very happy start to the summer if you're in the northern hemisphere and a very happy start to the winter if you're in the southern hemisphere 🌞❄
