Review: Kate Landry Has a Plan - Beignets for Two #2

Kate Landry Has a Plan book cover on blue background

Ever since I had my first taste of beignets after reading Julia Monroe Begins Again, I've been excitedly looking forward to the second book in the Beignets for Two series. Kate Landry Has a Plan by Rebekah Millet introduces us to Julia's best friend, Kate, revealing to us why Kate has adamantly been opposed to being in a relationship, with plenty of humour and Cajun charm to accompany the story.

Many thanks to Bethany House Publishers and LibraryThing for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Thoughts content is also posted on LibraryThing.

Book Synopsis

I turned to him, and he winked at me. Winked! We needed clear lines in place between us. We would not be flirty friends. We'd be friends, period. The sooner I made that distinction, the better.

Forty-year-old Kate Landry's carefully planned life has become as messy as the powdered sugar on her famous beignets. Juggling the responsibilities of running her café, raising her teenage niece, and the emotional baggage from her breakup, Kate finds her world once again turned upside down when her first-ever crush, Micah Guidry, returns to town as the hunky local librarian.

As Kate struggles to implement her plans to expand her café amid the New Orleans Mardi Gras madness and the meddling of her conniving ex-fiancé, Micah becomes the unwitting hero of her misadventures, stirring up feelings she thought she'd long buried. How can falling in love in the Big Easy be this hard?

Book Thoughts

This book is such a wonderful continuation of the Beignets for Two series. Rebekah Millet writes slightly older romances in a sweet and loving manner, full of maturity and grace. I love the interactions between Kate and her adopted niece, Hayley, giving us a peek into Kate's heart in helping others. Micah is the perfect person to reenter her life and show Kate that not everything has to go according to plan. There are so many good lessons about trusting God in this story that I enjoyed seeing how everything unfolded between Kate, Micah, Hayley, and their surrounding family members. The overwhelming work schedule described throughout is relatable and makes the book feel even more real.

I appreciate the snippets of New Orleans culture that the author injects, providing a taste of the culinary wonders and Cajun traditions in Louisiana. It is also a treat to see library programming outside of its usual four walls. Overall, the messages of forgiveness and not holding someone else's sins toward an innocent party are profound messages in Kate Landry Has a Plan. If you're looking for a book that speaks to the power of friendship and loyalty and how God has the best plans in store for us, this is a book that will have you immediately ordering beignets to go along with your reading.

Life Up North

I'm going to go against my previous posts about keeping my opinions to myself on things outside of faith and reading by sharing some of my recent experiences instead. I figure that if we read fiction to broaden our understanding of other perspectives that it might be worthwhile for me to share how things have been for me as a non-representative Canadian (I'm not speaking for anyone else here!) 😄 I'll be honest in that it's been tough in the last few weeks and months. I've done my best to keep up my optimism and more importantly, my hope in Christ, Who is unchanging and steadfast. Rulers come and go, nations evolve and change, and politics can swing back and forth, but God is immutable and sovereign over all things. That being said, recent geopolitical factors have resulted in an emotional toll on me and a lot of the people I interact with in my life. While I am grateful that I can place my burdens at the foot of the cross, I recognize that others in my life have va...

All the Cheese

I've been coming across content within the past several weeks that has stereotyped Christian books (and other mediums) as being cheesy on Christian accounts. While this isn't a new label or even a new topic, what has surprised me somewhat has been seeing more Christian authors jump into this conversation who wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Although some authors will name others whom they believe are writing non-cheesy fiction, I feel as though the damage has been done by repeating this blanket statement. While readers have freely been engaging in this type of commentary for some time, it's been interesting to see authors chime in, where in some cases, there seems to be an emphasis on self-promotion over reflection. I'm not stereotyping and saying that all authors or even the authors I'm connected to respond with this tactic (because I really don't think they do!), but there are a few out there from my limited experience who seem to respond to this disc...
