Review: The Darkness Deepens - The Day Draws Near #2

The Darkness Deepens book cover on blue background

If you've read The End Begins, the first book in the The Day Draws Near series (previously The Seven Trilogy) by Sara Davison, The Darkness Deepens takes you further as this sequel further delves into Jesse and Meryn's story. I wouldn't say that this book is a standalone book as it builds upon the previous one, but I would say that reading the first book will certainly whet your appetite for this one as you find out what's next.

I am grateful to the publisher, Mountain Brook Ink, for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

Their secrets protect them... but secrets are hard to keep.

No one in the army can find out that Captain Jesse Christensen has become a believer. He and bookstore owner Meryn O'Reilly are forced to meet in secret, facing imprisonment-or worse-if they are found together.

As their relationship deepens, so does Lieutenant Gallagher's hatred for the Christians in their city, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.

Meryn wants to give her heart to Jesse fully, but her past holds her back. Although circumstances conspire to keep her silent, she needs to tell him her secret so nothing will stand between them anymore.

But when he finds out what she has been keeping from him, nothing will ever be the same.

Book Thoughts

If The End Begins is the book where Meryn O'Reilly shines, then this book is the one where Jesse Christensen will capture your heart. This book paints such a realistic picture of a post-Christian nation that my mind was completely immersed in all of the scenarios that Christians would have to face in this world, causing me to have a better understanding of how the cost to follow Jesus is high. The author does an astounding job of living up to the title where darkness is pervasive, and there is no telling how far it can go. Yet, despite the horrendous activities taking place against Christians, there is a thread of hope and light that at times is faint, but ensures the promise of God's presence with His people, no matter what.

I truly enjoyed Jesse's perspective in this book and the immense growth that he has undergone since meeting him. As secrets unravel and danger escalates, The Darkness Deepens will keep Christian readers on the edge of their seats to see what happens next. The spiritual realities continue to hit home, showing us the clash between good and evil in a time where Christians are prohibited from owning Bibles, sharing their faith, and even having free movement. Eerie and spine-tingling do not begin to describe the horrors that Jesse and Meryn witness; however, their faith is what sustains them and keeps them going. If you're looking for an action-packed military story where Christians are being persecuted in Canada, this is a nail-biter of a book that will keep you in gripping suspense throughout the series.

Things I'm Not Supposed to Do

It's interesting to discover what people should be and shouldn't be doing when they share about books online. More and more, I feel like there can be a backlash against anything now, to the point where anyone with a passion for books can feel paralyzed in offering their own bookish content. For the large part, I try to tune out these things because it's ever-changing, and if it's not one thing, it'll be another. I'm sad when people feel stifled due to these capricious "rules" that half (if not more of) the time seem to keep people from excitedly engaging in what they love most. I'm thankful that I've received immense support from the reading community when I first started out, so I want to encourage anyone who is thinking of jumping in with their personal approach to books by sharing how I practically break the following ten rules covering things from content generation to materials access: I'm not supposed to use Canva for my book posts.  ...

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! May you have a blessed day, celebrating the birth of our Saviour. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. - Luke 2:11 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. Review: Entanglements - Finding Ever After #2

Last week, I shared about the first novella in the Finding Ever After anthology. I'm grateful that I was able to borrow the second novella in this book, Entanglements by Rachel McMillan , from Kindle Unlimited. I wish I could read the other half of the collection; however, I'm glad that two books exist out there to access! Book Synopsis Nic Ricci is a North End piano tuner and part time math tutor who wants nothing more than to compose; but there are few pennies to be found and an ailing father to support. When a well-paying opportunity arises as a rehearsal pianist for a wealthy heiress giving a recital at the Boston Conservatory, Nic grabs at the chance. He does not, however, anticipate a beautiful, intelligent woman frustratingly accompanied by a chaperone and promised to a brute of a fiance. Esther Hunisett is trapped by her father’s poor business decisions, her dowry and future attached to a man who will save her family’s estate. With little to barter before her life is ...
