Review: Anytime - Mayberry University #3

Anytime book cover on blue background

This is it! Anytime by Kristina Welch is the third book in the Mayberry University series where we get to encounter students with a heart for Jesus and a passion to serve Him wherever He calls them.

In this opposites attract new adult romance, we meet Janie and Mav who are like day and night in their personalities and temperaments in every way, except in their love for God.

Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Content to be aware of: While Anytime could be read as a standalone, this is a heads up that there is a lot of terminology that is dependent on the previous books, especially around the university itself with all of the lingo and the nicknames for the characters. A man's shirt is also removed and there is talk of skimpy clothing.

Book Synopsis

Rigid productivity queen, meet prank-loving chaos monger.

Can he wait for God to lead the way?

Can she stop trying to map it all out?

Janie Scott has the next ten years planned to perfection: top grades, law school, then child advocacy in Thailand. God’s been radio silent since that vision, but Janie can take it from here. Research says she’ll need friends. Fine. Her resume needs a Speech and Debate club. She’s on it. Task three: avoid Mav—Kit’s brother, resident prankster, and relentless enemy of Janie’s peace.

Mav Talbot craves friends as radical for Jesus as he is. Austin Scott is one, so Mav will be steering clear of his fiercely guarded sister. But Austin himself talks Mav into co-leading her club, Kit’s crew ropes them all into weekly “family” dinners, and Mav’s fellow Flooders pull Janie into their orbit. Traitors, every one of them.

Mav’s delight-filled faith meets its other half in Janie’s disciplined devotion, and their teamwork is an inconvenient masterpiece. They spar like Jim and Dwight, but Mav has the nerve to make even Janie’s sharp edges feel lovable.

Continent-sized problem: Janie’s future is waiting in Thailand. She won’t drag Mav across the world. He respects her dream too much to ask her to stay. Neither will sacrifice obedience for the other, but how can they let each other go?

How do we find our calling?

What do we do in the meantime?

Book Thoughts

This is a book that will wholly immerse you into Gen Z's way of thinking and speaking, making it just right for new adults. Taking place on a Christian college campus, it's a glimpse into a world where the students are learning to make their faith their own and discovering what it means to follow Jesus unreservedly. It's exciting to join along for the ride, although it is not without its challenges as Janie and Mav realize that waiting on God doesn't always involve moving forward. In grappling with what delays mean in God's will, these two characters have the opportunity to find out what serving Him looks like in each season in life.

Janie's driven nature and desire to become a lawyer fighting injustice is complemented by Mav's zeal for the Lord, resulting in fiery interactions that extend beyond debate club, haiku poems, and close friendship circles. At the end of the day, this book shares how essential it is to listen to God's leading, especially when we are prone to run ahead of Him with the passions He has gifted us with. Readers who have read the previous Mayberry University books will be keen to see how the series wraps up with the set of three couples spurring each other on toward being faithful disciples of Christ.

Book Quotes

I will delight in you with singing. Delight. Singing? Could God really look at me like this—intense, determined, hard to settle—and still … delight? Maybe I’ve been treating you like a coach with a clipboard when you’re more of a dad with a baby. I’m so desperate not to disappoint you. I want so badly not to need forgiveness. But you died for that forgiveness, and to think I could avoid needing it is absurd. Pride up and down. Did I really think I could be too good to need your saving?

Review: Jesus Ate Carbs

It can be easy to think that we just need the right ingredients, meals, and diet plans that will suddenly transform our bodies. However, Jesus Ate Carbs by Abbie Frye probes deeper beyond a physical transformation to a spiritual one that invites God into every aspect of our lives. Obviously not limited to carbs (and acknowledging that allergies exist), this book is one that makes us probe a little deeper about why we eat, what needing to eat says about our relationship with our Creator, and how we can eat in alignment with His original design for it. Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Content to be aware of : heavy reliance on Ruth Haley Barton; theology around sentence of “God reveres us and is in awe of us ” (pg. 130); contemplative spirituality practices; direct messages from God to the author, such as “God told me that He has me in the ministry of reconciliation” (pg. 180)...
