Review: Inspired by the Hero - Heroes of Freedom Ridge #15

Inspired by the Hero book cover on blue background

Inspired by the Hero by Elle E. Kay is one suspenseful read! It's such a thrill to see how all of the different writing styles have come together in the Heroes of Freedom Ridge series to create the perfect medley. It's also fascinating to see how each author builds upon their earlier books in the series, as is the case with Gage now getting his own story. To be honest, first impressions of him were not too favourable, so it's certainly worth it to get his side of things!

Book Synopsis

Can a blizzard be a blessing?

Casey Crawford knows how the town of Freedom, Colorado feels about her and her family. She’s heard the whispers and knows they have no more use for her than they have for AC in December.

So, when she gets trapped in a chalet in the woods with the object of her secret crush and he shows interest in her, she knows it can’t lead to happily-ever-after. He’ll eventually see that the Crawfords are nothing but trouble, and if she doesn’t get him killed first, she’ll ruin his reputation.

Gage Buchanan has had his share of trouble, and isn’t looking for more, but when he offers Casey a ride home from work, someone starts shooting at them. He can’t leave a damsel in distress to her own devices, and the more time they spend together the more she finds her way into the cracks in the wall he’s built up around his heart.

He knows she deserves better than him, but if she keeps turning those trusting blue eyes his way, he won’t be able to keep himself from wishing they could be more than friends. In order for that to happen, he has to keep her alive and figure out why someone wants her dead. He plans to do just that. There are forces at work he can't control, but God can, if he'll turn to Him.

Book Thoughts

After first meeting Gage and learning of his past sin, it was interesting to step into his world and discover that he is still beating himself up. At the same time, Casey is also struggling due to someone else's sin, which makes for quite the pairing as this couple learns to trust God through many trials and adversities. This book is much more action-packed than some of the more recent Heroes of Freedom Ridge series books, so readers should buckle up! There is a sinister plot taking place along with a trigger warning for r*pe, although the focus of the book is mostly on survival and trying to navigate a new relationship.

Readers who are interested in medicine will enjoy the information provided through Casey's work as a physician's assistant. It's heartwarming to see recurring characters come to each other's rescue and to see how deep the friendships run in Freedom, Colorado. I personally enjoyed the parts referencing missionary work, which was the icing on the cake for me. Don't forget to check out the bonus scene from the author where you can see Casey and Gage interact with each other in a very different setting.

Things I'm Not Supposed to Do

It's interesting to discover what people should be and shouldn't be doing when they share about books online. More and more, I feel like there can be a backlash against anything now, to the point where anyone with a passion for books can feel paralyzed in offering their own bookish content. For the large part, I try to tune out these things because it's ever-changing, and if it's not one thing, it'll be another. I'm sad when people feel stifled due to these capricious "rules" that half (if not more of) the time seem to keep people from excitedly engaging in what they love most. I'm thankful that I've received immense support from the reading community when I first started out, so I want to encourage anyone who is thinking of jumping in with their personal approach to books by sharing how I practically break the following ten rules covering things from content generation to materials access: I'm not supposed to use Canva for my book posts.  ...

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! May you have a blessed day, celebrating the birth of our Saviour. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. - Luke 2:11 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

Review: A Theology of the Ordinary

Since Christmas is nearing and it's a busy season, I thought a small book (only 68 pages) would be nice to share about.  A Theology of the Ordinary by Julie Canlis was a book that ended up being surprising in different ways, with a lot packed into a short volume. Book Synopsis Julie Canlis is an award-winning author who has turned her attention to the ordinary. With the surge of books and blogs celebrating the ordinary, she lays a theological foundation for this celebration based upon the Father's blessing of ordinary life, the Son's incarnation in ordinary life, and the Spirit's re-creation of ordinary life. First, turning her attention to American revivalist roots, she explores how this has seeped into evangelicalism's DNA, pushing ordinary life in Christ to the margins. Then, she begins by turning to the Father's blessing of ordinary life in creation, and the way in which temple-language mimics creation-language, revealing all of the world to be God's te...
