Review: Saving the Single Dad's Bookstore

Saving the Single Dad's Bookstore book cover on blue background

I am really thrilled about the upcoming release of this book by a local-to-me author! In following the journey of this book's publication, I'm glad that I was able to read the first chapter of Saving the Single Dad's Bookstore when it had a different title, and even more excited now to see the final result. For full disclosure, I was on Nicole Lam's ARC team and received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. For anyone interested in signing up for the ARC team, it is still available at the following link.

Book Synopsis

A doubtful owner. A determined employee.

Together, can they build a future?

After inheriting his late grandfather’s bookstore, Dominic Tang must make a big decision: keep it or sell. But manager Gianna Marchesi insists she can prove he should keep Tang’s Terrific Tomes open if he’ll stay in town for two months. Falling for the charms of the store—and Gianna—comes easy. But when property damage threatens his already-tight budget, will Dominic risk everything to follow his heart?

Book Thoughts

This is a book that I have been anticipating ever since reading its initial chapter, and it lived up to my expectations and more. Nicole Lam is skilled at drawing people into her stories and having them remain as a result of her well-paced writing that keeps readers suspended to the pages. Gianna and Dominic are relatable in their work struggles with their banter pointing to definite, underlying chemistry. Nicole writes such believable family interactions that these shine through the most in her books. Seeing her characters in the context of their families paints a more complete picture of their motivations and behaviour, enriching the story. This element is superbly carried out in Saving the Single Dad's Bookstore, where we can see cross-cultural dynamics at play.

What I most appreciate about this book is how the author weaves in spiritual truths about identity, redemption, and restoration over time. The issues that Gianna and Dominic face cannot be solved by sheer human will, acknowledging their shared need for God. Alongside these spiritual messages, there is gentle humour, a dash of villainy, immersive experiences with food, and touching scenes with Emmett, Dominic's son. Nicole's debut with Love Inspired will have readers feeling at home in the Canadian mountain town of Crabtree, not wanting to leave as they rally for the bookstore and its charming owners.

Review: The Call of Living Water - Refuge #1

Be still, my missions-loving heart! This is hands-down, one of the best fictional books I've read on this theme, and I cannot gush enough about it. The Call of Living Water by Alexis M. Melvin is a new book that will be released on August 23, 2025 and  if I had to suggest a Christian fiction title that could make a difference in your walk with God this summer, it would be this one. Many thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Content to be aware of : tribal sacrifices, martyrdom Book Synopsis When the God of Living Water calls, will Suái be willing to risk her life and the lives of everyone she loves to answer? However, when a missionary arrives speaking of the loving God of Living Water, Suái’s curiosity leads her down a dangerous path. Thrust into a new life with p...

All the Cheese

I've been coming across content within the past several weeks that has stereotyped Christian books (and other mediums) as being cheesy on Christian accounts. While this isn't a new label or even a new topic, what has surprised me somewhat has been seeing more Christian authors jump into this conversation who wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Although some authors will name others whom they believe are writing non-cheesy fiction, I feel as though the damage has been done by repeating this blanket statement. While readers have freely been engaging in this type of commentary for some time, it's been interesting to see authors chime in, where in some cases, there seems to be an emphasis on self-promotion over reflection. I'm not stereotyping and saying that all authors or even the authors I'm connected to respond with this tactic (because I really don't think they do!), but there are a few out there from my limited experience who seem to respond to this disc...
