After reading some of the Gilded Age books by Grace Hitchcock, I'm delighted that I've been able to finish the Best Laid Plans series, set in the Regency era.
Many thanks to Kregel Publications for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Book Synopsis
A Regency-era enemies-to-lovers romance set in the magnificent Scottish Isles
Tess Hale has always been taught to fend for herself, but she never needed to until the night bounty hunters come knocking. It's 1813 in Great Britain, and Tess's best laid plans crumble when her father sends her alone in the dead of night to an island cottage to escape them. She finds herself in a world of warring clans she didn't know existed.
After a decade as a spy separated from his clan, Jamie Malcom has a duty to fulfill as next in line as chief-but his absence means he must earn his people's loyalty. He pursues a treasure stolen from his clan long ago, and it leads him straight to Tess.
As Tess grapples with her past, Jamie vows to protect her future―but lies revealed shatter the trust they had been building. For purposes beyond themselves, they are thrust into a marriage neither of them wanted . . . at first.

Book Thoughts
I am so glad that I got to read the previous books in the Best Laid Plans series as it made reading To Win a Wager even more of a fulfilling journey with such a unique trio of friends. After meeting Muriel and Vivienne, I loved finding out why Tess is so adept with throwing knives and other survival tactics. The opening scene is perfect with Tess and her knives as the story comes full circle, hinting at more perilous adventures to come. In discovering the breadth of skills that Tess possesses, there could be no match for her other than Jamie Malcolm, who is sent to retrieve the stolen jewels. This book had me devouring it as quickly as possible through all of the enthralling twists and turns, especially when encountering those wishing Tess and Jamie harm.
I appreciate that the depth of spiritual transformation is brought up as conversion and genuine repentant behaviour are addressed. Seeing Tess and Jamie lean on God for strength and provision as they escape threatening circumstances makes their story more believable when we know that there is a sovereign God working out all things for good. Prayer is even more essential to the battle than the physical weapons wielded. Readers will find that Grace Hitchcock offers daring heroines, swashbuckling heroes, and wartime action, accompanied by an everlasting love found in Christ in this grand finale that only Tess and Jamie can pull off in the Scottish Highlands.

Book Quotes
Ah, lovely. More time in Jamie's arms. The ton will devour me if they ever catch wind of this misadventure. Her finishing school training must have really made a mark for that thought to keep rising. Still, Tess felt she could trust this man who had proven himself many times over already. She was no longer playing the grand lady for whom reputation was everything. But she valued propriety, even as a woman who had been labeled a wildling. She would be a woman of character no matter her lack of an earthly chaperone. She had standards, and the strength of that character came from the Lord God Himself. She would not be alone. Christ was watching over her.
