Book Synopsis

The Secret to Conflict-Proof Communication

  • Build whole and healthy relationships that can weather life's storms
  • Learn how to keep your heart open to those around you--even when you disagree
  • From a licensed clinical psychologist

There is a moment that repeats itself over and over again in your relationships—it's the moment you're triggered to flip from connection mode into protection mode. This moment is the unseen source of all disconnection and conflict. However, it happens so quickly and unconsciously most of us feel powerless to choose connection. The Road Less Triggered will empower you to:

  • quickly disrupt your defensiveness
  • turn inner turmoil into inner peace
  • connect with clarity, curiosity, and compassion

Through a powerful blend of psychology, spirituality, real-world examples, and practical exercises, clinical psychologist Dr. Kelly Flanagan illustrates in actionable detail the process through which you can free your relationships from the patterns that imprison them. Can you imagine uninterrupted peace with your partner? Kids who leave home but also love to return? Friendships that deepen instead of dwindle? Ruptured relationships restored to their highest potential? A professional life freed from personal hang-ups? All those rewards and more lie just ahead of you, down the road less triggered.

Book Thoughts

This is a clear-cut book that encourages readers to do the inner work needed within us so that we can have healthy relationships. Filled with useful stories, examples, and exercises, there is something beneficial offered in every chapter for believers who wish to become instruments of peace rather than harbingers of conflict. Written by a clinical psychologist, there is much to unpack as this book examines techniques we can adopt to resolve escalating issues due to being triggered. I appreciate that the case studies are relatable and that I can envision myself adopting some of the methods provided.

The Road Less Triggered is a wonderful aid for anyone interested in gaining psychological understanding along with practical support for interpersonal conflicts, whether it is within marriages, families, or friendships. The spiritual content draws from multiple sources but if readers are purely looking at the framework and model, there is much that comes from Scripture in terms of how we are to examine ourselves and to live at peace with others, as much as is possible. If you’ve encountered the same roadblocks time and again in attempting to connect with others, Dr. Kelly Flanagan shares how these stumbling blocks can be cleared in order to have an open heart and fruitful outcomes flowing out from that state.

Review: A Compelling Faith in a Compromising Culture

Not only does this book have a catchy title, but it reinforces the notion that retreat is not always the best defense. Looking back at church history, I am always amazed that how God uses His people to stand up for justice, truth, and righteousness. However, this is not done as a result of anyone's personal strength or will. God is the one who equips, with followers obediently living up to the call that has been placed on their lives to understand the times and how best to interact with them. A Compelling Faith in a Compromising Culture by Mike Tatlock is a blueprint on how we can follow these steps today. Many thanks to  Moody Publishers  for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis When our faith is challenged, the best response isn’t to fall back. It’s to go deeper. We’re living in a cultural storm. Perhaps you feel it. Postmodern philosophy and secular ideologies have trickled from academia to the broade...

Review: Her Off-Limits Charity Date - Unexpected Dates #3

Happy release day to the third book in the Unexpected Dates series ! Her Off-Limits Charity Date  by Liwen Y. Ho  is a perfect book for summer, and involves a soft-hearted zombie actor with a penchant for cooking. Now who doesn't want to learn more about a man who can do both?! Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis The one man I’m falling for is the one man I absolutely shouldn’t want. As a professional event planner, I’m used to managing chaos. My own love life, however, is another story. Especially after I meet my brother’s new brother-in-law and discover he looks like he walked straight out of a romance novel. Tall? Check. Piercing blue eyes? Check. Broody enough to make my heart do inconvenient things? Double check. Unfortunately, Zane Beckett also happens to be a famous actor. And our first meeting gets off to a rocky start when he finds out I’ve never seen any of his movi...

A Deinfluenced Christmas

This piece is more for myself than for anyone else out there, as I feel that I am one of the last people who should be writing about a deinfluenced Christmas at the volume that I end up procuring books. It's also not a new thought as I've previously shared about my desire to move from consumption to stewardship  in my life, and what it means to not only be a thoughtful reader, but to also be someone who doesn't end up becoming consumed by books itself. Despite believing in this concept, I still wrestle with it in reality, especially when the Christmas season hits and the temptation to take advantage of as many sales as I can is high. I don't offer any particular solutions other than to recognize that I easily fall into many marketing traps, and that my self-control could use some work. Black Friday and Cyber Monday and what has become an entire month of sales doesn't help, though it does pay off if I'm willing to wait for a while and have already done so (keepin...
