Review: Breath of the Almighty

I've had the pleasure of revisiting my love of poetry through reading poignant and touching collections of Christian poetry that I've been introduced to on Instagram. I'm grateful that Breath of the Almighty by Shay McNally came at just the right time for me, tugging on my heart and my mind through verses that point back to God in every breath and poem.

Book Thoughts

I love that God has given us the gift of words and language, especially when they convey much more than the text on the page. In the case of Breath of the Almighty, Shay McNally's poetry palpably communicates her heart and faith through beautiful free verse that imparts her belief in the divine among everyday life. Taking on a confessional tone, readers can't help but feel that they are receiving a personal glimpse into the poet's life as there is both a bold proclamation of God's work and an acknowledgement of reliance on Him amid frailty and difficulties.

As the poems progress, there is a sense that the faith becomes deeper and more tangibly experienced as an act of Christian worship. Reading this collection truly feels like going on a journey, and it's one that is as edifying as it is clarifying when God's truths are expressed. In light of mentioning Canada, it made sense for me to review a local author's book!
