Review: Misgivings

Misgivings book cover on blue background

I'm grateful that Anne Gibson reached out to me to inform me about her debut novel, Misgivings, as it's one that reminded me of the work I used to do in domestic violence prevention and why it's so critical that we learn how to help others. This is a book that will take you into the heart of what abuse can look and feel like, and the decisions that people may feel driven to make. It's on Kindle Unlimited and worth reading as it compassionately lifts the voices of those who may be undergoing a lot on their own in silence.

Content to be aware of: domestic violence and abuse

Book Synopsis

Desperate to avoid the turmoil that now engulfs her, Dee would do anything for a chance to turn back time. Wracked with regret and paralyzed by fear, she is forced to hide halfway across the world, all in a bid to safeguard the one person she holds most dear. If only she could undo the past and prevent this disastrous situation from ever unfolding.

After waiting five long years, Luke thought he was finally making progress in his relationship with Dee. But just as she begins to open up and trust him, she suddenly vanishes, leaving him bewildered and determined to uncover the truth behind her sudden disappearance.

Anne Gibson’s debut novel is an action-packed, second-chance romance featuring a relatable protagonist who must confront her inner darkness in order to discover her faith. In the middle of her path is a bold hero who steadfastly clings to his beliefs as he overcomes uncertainty.

Book Thoughts

This is a grittier Christian fiction book that delves into domestic violence and as such, may be challenging for some readers as it goes quite in-depth into the various forms of abuse that can take place in relationships. As a story, it raises awareness into how domestic violence can affect anybody. As a message that imparts empathy, it demonstrates why it's not always easy to have an exit available. With readers being able to get into Dee's mind, it makes her relatable, as if she could be one of our own friends or a colleague who is hiding something that is threatening her life. While not a breezy read, it's an important one as it shows how we can support those around us who may be suffering.

One of the things that stands out in this book is the extent to which people will act in desperation, whether they are the victim or the perpetrator. It's against this backdrop that Dee finds she needs God's help most. I appreciate that things aren't tied up with neat solutions along the way, indicating our ongoing reliance on Him. The last part of the book is quite jam-packed, so prepare yourself for all of the emotional twists possible, with a gratifying end to come. Readers who enjoy action and plenty of drama will find much to experience in Misgivings.

Review: The Call of Living Water - Refuge #1

Be still, my missions-loving heart! This is hands-down, one of the best fictional books I've read on this theme, and I cannot gush enough about it. The Call of Living Water by Alexis M. Melvin is a new book that will be released on August 23, 2025 and  if I had to suggest a Christian fiction title that could make a difference in your walk with God this summer, it would be this one. Many thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. All the Cheese

I've been coming across content within the past several weeks that has stereotyped Christian books (and other mediums) as being cheesy on Christian accounts. While this isn't a new label or even a new topic, what has surprised me somewhat has been seeing more Christian authors jump into this conversation who wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Although some authors will name others whom they believe are writing non-cheesy fiction, I feel as though the damage has been done by repeating this blanket statement. While readers have freely been engaging in this type of commentary for some time, it's been interesting to see authors chime in, where in some cases, there seems to be an emphasis on self-promotion over reflection. I'm not stereotyping and saying that all authors or even the authors I'm connected to respond with this tactic (because I really don't think they do!), but there are a few out there from my limited experience who seem to respond to this disc...
