Her Summer Refuge book cover on blue background

I've started collecting the Love Inspired titles that Gabrielle Meyer has written and was thrilled to be able to preorder this book, all the way back in the fall. Entering the Restful August Challenge, I thought that reading Her Summer Refuge would be the perfect way to kick it off!

Book Synopsis

She needs his help to start over…

But can she earn his trust?

Jobless and alone, mom-to-be Jessa Brooks returns to the resort she once called home—only to find the man she left a decade before. New owner Will Madden offers his pregnant ex a cabin, a job…and a silent vow to keep his distance. But working together makes it impossible to stay away. As old feelings resurface, could they find the refuge they both need in each other?

Book Thoughts

What a treat to enjoy this sweet summer story where Jessa has the opportunity to return home to Timber Falls after experiencing some devastating events overseas. I appreciate her vulnerability as she tries to overcome past regrets, and I love that the people in the town rally around her as she tries to do so. The sense of community in this book is rich, especially with the Christians in her church. Will also plays a pivotal role in caring for Jessa, which is a huge feat as he is battling his own emotions. Getting to see him act in a selfless manner truly makes him stand out amongst the men in this book.

The themes of hope, forgiveness, and love are strongly woven throughout Jessa and Will's story, traits that also characterize Will's family members. Christian faith is evident as the characters continually seek God while facing circumstances that look bleak. It doesn't take long to see how God is working in their lives as they yield to Him. As a result, it is lovely to see both Will and Timber Falls offer refuge to a woman who is in desperate need. If you're looking for a summer escape that offers touching moments and simple joy, Her Summer Refuge hits the spot.

Review: A Compelling Faith in a Compromising Culture

Not only does this book have a catchy title, but it reinforces the notion that retreat is not always the best defense. Looking back at church history, I am always amazed that how God uses His people to stand up for justice, truth, and righteousness. However, this is not done as a result of anyone's personal strength or will. God is the one who equips, with followers obediently living up to the call that has been placed on their lives to understand the times and how best to interact with them. A Compelling Faith in a Compromising Culture by Mike Tatlock is a blueprint on how we can follow these steps today. Many thanks to  Moody Publishers  for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis When our faith is challenged, the best response isn’t to fall back. It’s to go deeper. We’re living in a cultural storm. Perhaps you feel it. Postmodern philosophy and secular ideologies have trickled from academia to the broade...

Review: Her Off-Limits Charity Date - Unexpected Dates #3

Happy release day to the third book in the Unexpected Dates series ! Her Off-Limits Charity Date  by Liwen Y. Ho  is a perfect book for summer, and involves a soft-hearted zombie actor with a penchant for cooking. Now who doesn't want to learn more about a man who can do both?! Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis The one man I’m falling for is the one man I absolutely shouldn’t want. As a professional event planner, I’m used to managing chaos. My own love life, however, is another story. Especially after I meet my brother’s new brother-in-law and discover he looks like he walked straight out of a romance novel. Tall? Check. Piercing blue eyes? Check. Broody enough to make my heart do inconvenient things? Double check. Unfortunately, Zane Beckett also happens to be a famous actor. And our first meeting gets off to a rocky start when he finds out I’ve never seen any of his movi...

A Deinfluenced Christmas

This piece is more for myself than for anyone else out there, as I feel that I am one of the last people who should be writing about a deinfluenced Christmas at the volume that I end up procuring books. It's also not a new thought as I've previously shared about my desire to move from consumption to stewardship  in my life, and what it means to not only be a thoughtful reader, but to also be someone who doesn't end up becoming consumed by books itself. Despite believing in this concept, I still wrestle with it in reality, especially when the Christmas season hits and the temptation to take advantage of as many sales as I can is high. I don't offer any particular solutions other than to recognize that I easily fall into many marketing traps, and that my self-control could use some work. Black Friday and Cyber Monday and what has become an entire month of sales doesn't help, though it does pay off if I'm willing to wait for a while and have already done so (keepin...
