Review: A Month of Musings

A Month of Musings book cover on blue background

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of author Liwen Y. Ho, and I'm delighted that she recently released a non-fiction title! A Month of Musings: On Motherhood, Marriage, & the Mundane (but Meaningful) Moments of Life was such a lovely and gentle devotional book that I wanted to share it immediately.

Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Book Synopsis

Once upon a time, before Liwen Y. Ho was a romance author, she had a blog. This book is a compilation of her favorite posts on marriage, motherhood, and everything in between. With humor and thoughtfulness, Liwen shares thirty personal stories and the lessons she learned to help you find strength in life’s difficult moments and joy in life’s mundane ones.

Book Thoughts

I appreciated the conversational tone employed in this devotional book, which came across as more of a conversation that you would have with a friend. In these conversations, deep truths emerge about our identity as women and how we live out our faith. I was touched by the thought-provoking questions that Liwen prepared to accompany each story and by her skills as a storyteller. Each theme is relatable and points toward how God can use the day-to-day activities of our lives to bring us closer to Him.

A Month of Musings is far from mundane, and Liwen's expert weaving of anecdotes that read like short stories (including a few unexpected plot twists!) with spiritual truths is a refreshing read. To be able to do both within a blog post turned devotional is an incredible skill and speaks to how well-developed her lengthier stories are! Although I read this book in just a few sittings because it was such a joy to hear from her perspective, I would certainly go back and take the chapters in one at a time. Much like enjoying a delightful dessert at the end of dinner, Liwen's book is a sweet way to reflect upon our days.

Book Quotes

...If it were not for the bad things in life, we might not ever experience the good. Goodness—lived out in the forms of compassion, generosity, and empathy—thrives the most where loss, pain, and sadness exist. Such irony, isn't it? But such harmony as well.

Review: Another Gospel?

Having listened to Alisa Childers ' podcast over the years, I really enjoyed "chewing" my way through her debut book, Another Gospel? A Lifelong Christian Seeks Truth in Response to Progressive Christianity . It's taken me so long that she's now onto her third book! 😂 Book Synopsis A Movement Seeks to Redefine Christianity. Some Think that It Is a Much-Needed Progressive Reformation. Others Believe that It Is an Attack on Historic Christianity. Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship, as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor, who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wr...

Review: For Us

If you've been following April Barcalow for some time, you'll be just as excited to know that she has recently released a marriage devotional. Newsletter subscribers can receive a free copy, and you can learn more about the background of For Us: Seeking God's Heart for Marriage on her website. Many thanks to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Book Synopsis All throughout Scripture, when God wants us to understand the close, intimate relationship He longs to have with us, He uses the imagery of marriage. That’s no coincidence. Marriage is an echo of the lasting love we share with Him, a framework to help us understand, and a gift. But good marriage, the kind that reflects Him, doesn’t happen without intention. Without building each piece on the solid foundation of Christ. Without choosing one another, even when it’s hard. This 30-day devotional weaves together Scripture, personal experience, and story threads to seek God’s ...
